November 26 – Centennial Mass

Mass is on Friday, November 26 at 7 PM.  Practice for choir and musician is on Tuesday, November 23 at 7:30 PM.

PS: There will be no Thursday practice on Nov. 24 since the sanctuary will be used for Centennial Mission.

Chrismas Carols

Christmas is around the corner already.. Are you interested in singing 20 carols this Christmas and lend your cheerful sound to a retirement centre?

Mia has booked us to sing on Wed. Dec. 22 ( 7pm-8pm) at the Whitehorn Village Retirement Community 5200-44th Ave. NE  (corner of Mcnight Blvd. and 52nd St NE). There are also other opportunities to sing these pieces, however, we'll keep you posted.

If you are interested to join us, here are some information for you:

1. We will be singing Jay Althouse’s JOY: 20 carols for Christmas, arranged for Soprano, Alto and Baritones.  The arrangements are quite nice, unique, and contemporary. It can be sung in accapella - however it would be nice to have accompaniments in some, and some instrumental pieces in between. So if you can play guitar, djembe, violins, flute or whatever else, please let us know  
2. Some of you have been busy recording parts of the altos and tenors, so that everyone can listen to it and practice it ahead of time.   Below is the URL where we keep the music & the recorded bits.  So far we only have 7 songs recorded – however, it’ll grow!  A temporary scanned copy of the music is available there until the real copies arrived.    Note that the bits were recorded for practice purpose, please forgive the glitches! –  dynamic and other details to be done in rehearsals.    http://stjosephcalgary.com/files/songs/Christmas%20Carols/ 
3. We are planning to meet only twice before the rehearsals: Thursdays, Dec 9 & 16, at 8 PM (St. Joseph's church)

Update – Music Ministry Mtg.

Our next music ministry meeting is Tuesday, October 26 at 7:30 PM (Conference Room) - right after Mass.  Everyone is most welcome and your attendance is really appreciated. Our main task for the meeting is to pick the music selection for Advent/Christmas 2010 until the end of Feb. 2011, however, we will start with a 30 mnts general meeting (I'm still working on the agenda, hoping to send it your way a week before).  If you have some suggestion for new music (preferably from our new Glory and Praise book) and/or agenda items, please feel free to send it my way, via e-mail, or call me at (403) 689-3369.

Here is the list of the upcoming music ministry meetings - 2010/2011:

Hope these dates will help you plan ahead!  Just a reminder that we are meeting every Thursday at 7 PM for a choir practice. Thursday practice is the time to get comfortable with harmonies, dynamic, musician parts and new music, and other training (such as learning how to read music, vocal blend etc.) which is hard to cover during the short practice before Mass. It's only an hour of your time and it's always fun!  Please take advantage of it!  :-)

Practices, Glory & Praise, CD & Deacon Ordination Mass

Thanks for coming to the last Thursday practice everyone!  What a great start! Hope to see you again next Thursday at 7 pm.

To review what we've discussed at practice:

• We're starting our regular practice.  Please meet every week at 7 PM to 8 PM (practice for the upcoming songs for the weekend.  Everyone's welcome.)  8 PM to 9 PM is reserved for specific mass time, 1st week goes to Sunday 9 AM choir, 2nd week to Sunday 11 AM Choir, 3rd week to Sunday 5 PM Choir and 4th week to Saturday 5 PM Choir.
• Anyone who would like their own copy of "Glory and Praise" choral edition (remember the green book?) and a copy of vocal warm-up exercises CD - please email Lia and we'll get it ready for you.
• Choir members, if you can't make it into your usual choir mass time, you are welcome to join the other choirs, however, please make sure you attend the practice (ideally to the Thursday before, and/or to the one just before Mass).  Practice's schedule is in the bulletin.
• Some of you expressed interest to join the choir for the Deacon Ordination on October 3, 2010.  The practice is on Sunday, Sep. 26 at  2 PM (St. Mary's Cathedral).  If you're interested in joining this, please contact Lia at (403) 689-3369.
